The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)

Beautiful things do not ask for attention.

How I Found It

Its a Sunday, and I was feeling like a movie. I used to watch a lot of them in school days. One per week. Today, I felt like watching a self-love movie. I am a romance fan, but today I wanted something real. Something away from the rosy glasses, and a more into knowing oneself better. I had two choices (from ChatGPT):

  • 500 Days of Summer
  • The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

500 Days could be a bit depressing. I had started this movie few years back. And I believe it doesn’t add much to my content matter on hopeful romanticism. So yes, here we go.

A Glimpse

The movie starts with Walter Mitty on his keyboard. Mitty is a timid person, a hardworking employee. He is confused (or rather, afraid), to send a wink to a newly joined colleague on a dating site. He gets the courage, and poof Unable to process your request. Thats all the spoilers you get.

All in all, Mitty is a habitiual daydreamer. He wishes at every moment that he was free, lit and lived a dream life. He is stuck by an important challenge, which is going to be an adventure of a lifetime. The adventure ends up freeing him. He now believes that he has done great things in life, he can do great things. He is a confident man, more alive and less daydreaming.

Interpretation

Daydreaming here is a metaphor of our unfullfilled desires - The things we perceive that WILL BE the reasons of our happiness. We try to find hope by believing that “If I do this, I will be happy”. At least I know that there is something that WILL make me happy.

Mitty’s adventure is a reminder that life is too short to dream of happiness and live in the dream.

To see the world, things dangerous to come to, to see behind walls, draw closer, to find each other, and to feel. That is the purpose of life.
